Following the coronavirus outbreak in the country, all educational institutions have been closed since March.

When the BCS exam was announced, the university authorities decided to take the final exam for undergraduate and graduate students, but the residences remained closed.

Although the students were overwhelmed after posting the test-taking routine in various departments, they were concerned about where they would go to Dhaka to take the tests as the residential hall was closed.

The students have demanded to open the residence only for the examinees. Several student organizations are also supporting them.

On Thursday afternoon, the leaders of the Chhatra League and Pragatisheel Chhatra Jote went to the Vice Chancellor’s office and met with Professor Akhtaruzzaman and demanded that it be opened for the candidates.

The vice chancellor said: “It will take a national decision to open the room in a pandemic situation. Although the students demanded the opening of the room, we could not make a decision in isolation.

“All educational institutions have been declared closed until January 18. The government will decide based on the situation.”

The university authorities have decided to take the end-of-degree and postgraduate exams as of December 26.

Earlier, after a procession and demonstration on campus demanding the opening of a residential hall, the progressive student alliance surrounded the vice chancellor’s office with a memorandum. Later, the leaders of the alliance delivered a memorandum after meeting with the rector to demand four points. The president of the Student Union, Fayez Ullah, the president of the Socialist Student Front Masud Rana and the general secretary Nasiruddin Prince were present.

Progressive Chhatra Jote’s demands include immediate reopening of the room under administrative management by releasing the Chhatra League from occupancy, waiver of additional fees including session fee and other fees and fines, waiver of salary fees, ad sheet route to reopen the university by convening a meeting of the Environment Council.

The university student league had delivered a memorandum to the rector on December 13 to guarantee the students’ accommodation. But seeing no response to that demand, leaders of the organization headed by BCL University President Sanjit Chandra Das and Secretary General Saddam Hussein went to meet with the vice chancellor on Thursday.

Recognizing the plight of students, Vice Chancellor Akhtaruzzaman said: “However, the risks to the health and safety of students are more important than the plight of students in this epidemic.”

In accordance with the students’ demands, he said: “I do not disagree with that. But the point is that if it had been normal, we would have decided it. This closure is closed for emergent pandemic situations.

“It just came to our attention then. Some may even sue. At the international level, one may question that the national decision is one thing and the Dhaka University decision is another.”

“We cannot take the entire nation,” he said. Someone would call it Trump-like behavior. With these issues in mind, a national decision will be necessary to open the room. The opinion of interested experts from the health department will be required ”.

When BCL leaders raised the issue of renting student houses in Dhaka in a short period of time and the difficulties faced by female students, the Vice Chancellor said: “There will be some difficulties for female students. However, we have asked our peers to take the test with their opinion considering the advantages and disadvantages of the students. I have asked you to cooperate with those who have many problems.

Later, the BCL leaders ended the meeting with the rector demanding reconsideration of the matter. The rector welcomed his request and assured to discuss it with the Academic Council of the University.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists from the Dhaka University branch in Bangladesh, Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, have been holding a sit-in at the foot of the Raju sculpture since 11 a.m. on Wednesday demanding the opening of the residential hall of University. They have announced that they will be holding a sit-down program there until the demand is met.
