A housewife named Jannatul Sardar (20) has been beaten to death in South Keraniganj of Dhaka by her husband. The incident took place in the Abdullahpur Chowdhurypara area of the Tegharia Union of Upazila on Wednesday morning. Police arrested her husband Emon Mia (25) in the incident.
According to the police and relatives of the deceased, Emon, son of Bachchu Mia from the Panchghuirakandi area of Munshiganj district, married Jannat, daughter of Shawkat Mia from Jhaudi village in Madaripur a year ago. On August 20, Jannat and Emon rented Amir Hossain Member’s house in Teghariya Chowdhurypara. Husband and wife often had fights after marriage. Swami Emon used to beat Jannat every night.
Amir Hossain Member, owner of the house, said his wife committed suicide by hanging herself after Emon called me around 5am on Wednesday. I went to his house and saw Jannat’s body covered with a cloth on the bed. However, there was no arrangement to hang it inside the house.
Meanwhile, Maleka Begum, the deceased’s aunt, alleged that after the marriage, Emon demanded 160,000 rupees from Jannat for divorcing his ex-wife. She used to beat me almost all the time for this money. Aunt Maleka Begum alleged that Jannat was beaten to death by her husband.
Dakshin Keraniganj SI Quddus Police Station said: “I came to know that a woman had committed suicide by hanging herself in the Tegharia area since 999 am.” Upon receiving such news, I approached the place and saw the body of the deceased covered with a cloth on the bed. The body was subsequently sent to the Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital morgue for autopsy following an investigative report. The victim has bites on the hands and wound marks on the body.
The victim’s father, Shawkat Sardar, has filed a murder case with the South Keraniganj Police Station.
