A large-scale strike has been observed under the banner of the Palangkhali Rights Implementation Committee to demand just rights for the affected people of the Palangkhali Union, the largest Rohingya-inhabited area of Ukhia Upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
The Palangkhali Rights Implementation Committee observed a one-day strike from 8 am on Sunday (December 26).
Organized by the Palangkhali Rights Implementation Committee, the strike was attended by hundreds of locally educated unemployed youth, as well as victims of various levels. They took up positions on the road after the funeral in the morning and searched all the vehicles to prevent NGO workers from going to the camp.
They claim that the Rohingya have been causing various losses to the locals since 2016. They constantly enjoy it. As a result of the arrival of the Rohingya, several local and foreign international NGOs and NGOs are carrying out their activities in the Rohingya camps. They repeatedly work with Rohingya youth without giving them the opportunity to work, excluding the local educated community. Also, since the senior employees are from other regions, they are skillfully giving job opportunities to their family members. So the educated local society is being left out.
Social worker advocate MA Malek, Palangkhali Rights Implementation Committee coordinator Rabiul Alam, member secretary Abdul Gafur, joint coordinator Kamal Uddin, Delwar Hossain Bappi, Etminanul Haque, Mohammad Shahidullah and others spoke at the occasion.
The president of the Palangkhali Union Parishad M Gafur Uddin Chowdhury said that the locals are experiencing various problems due to the arrival of the Rohingya. NGOs and international NGOs are working with 80 per cent of Rohingya, excluding locals. Our main demand is to repatriate the Rohingya. But NGOs are working to rehabilitate the Rohingya without worrying about their repatriation.
Members of the Palangkhali Rights Implementation Committee said: “If we do not accept the proposed lawsuit, a larger program will be taken later.”
