General students of the Islamic University of Kushtia (IU) yesterday held a sit-in in front of the main gate of the Islamic University of Kushtia to demand justice for those involved in the death of former student Ulfat Ara Tinni.

The human chain took place in front of the main gate of the university around 12 noon. The students demanded the maximum punishment for the murderer subject to a proper investigation. At the same time, they warned of a tough move if there is no justice. The leaders of the Chhatra League of the Islamic University and the Chhatramaitri University Branch, local militants and villagers expressed their solidarity in the human chain.

The speakers of the human chain said: “We are in a great crisis and a tragic problem.” We all have mothers and sisters at home. Is my family safe? If the family of a freedom fighter and a former member of the military dies this way. In a country where I hear about the empowerment of women, why is my sister not sure? It is an embarrassment to the nation. Tinni’s ex-brother-in-law has killed Tinni in a hellish way with Sangpang.

Shailkupa police recovered the body hanging from Tinni’s bedroom at midnight last Thursday. Her home is in the Sheikhpara village of Shailkupa upazila adjacent to the campus. She is the daughter of Yusuf Ali, a late freedom fighter and former member of the village army. Her family has accused her ex-husband of killing her.

Tinni’s mother, Halima Begum, filed a case at the Shailkupa police station on Friday night. Police arrested 4 of the 8 defendants in the incident Friday night. According to police sources, there are 4 fugitives including Jamirul, the main defendant in the case.
