A 21-member Afghan government team, led by former intelligence chief Masum Stanekzai, participated in the talks. The Taliban are led by Maulvi Abdul Hakim, the group’s Chief Justice.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Qatar to attend the opening ceremony.

The peace talks were supposed to take place after a security deal between the United States and the Taliban was reached last February. But delays in implementing the Afghan prisoner exchange promises have set it back.

However, it is believed that meaningful results may not be obtained quickly from this discussion.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also spoke at the beginning of the peace talks. He said that to be successful in these peace talks, hard work and great sacrifices are required.

The Afghan peace talks began a day after the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. The United States has launched an operation in Afghanistan to topple the Taliban government on allegations that al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was not extradited.
