The agreement was reached at a meeting of leaders of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) and the Association of Cable Operators of Bangladesh (COAB) with Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh in Nagar Bhawan, in the south, on Sunday.
In a briefing after the meeting, Mayor Tapas said: “Starting today, no roadblocks will be cut on the South City highway. At our meeting it was decided that they would connect the cables to the ground floor on their own and immediately cut the cables hanging above them.
“We just realized that they had promised to finish it next November. That’s why we are not going to cut it.”
The mayor also said that the city corporation was allowed to dig a road to remove the hanging wire and bring it underground, adding that the road will be repaired later at the expense of the city corporation.
ISPAB President MA Hakim said: “Starting today, we will remove the hanging wire and begin to connect it underground. I hope I can do it in November.
ISPAB and Coab have called for a strike to demand an end to a mobile court operation launched last month to remove trash hanging from two corporate areas of the city in Dhaka.
They had announced that they would shut down internet and cable television services across the country from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every day starting Sunday unless moving work was stopped without alternative measures.
Banking sector officials expressed concern over his announcement. Several school authorities also decided to change their online class schedule to evening classes instead of morning classes.
In this context, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Mustafa Jabbar, and the Minister of State for Information and Communication Technology, Junaid Ahmed Palak, met with ISPAB leaders on Saturday afternoon.
ISPAB president Abdul Hakim said the program would be suspended “for now” after assurances from the minister at the meeting.
They are no longer going on strike because their impeachment campaign was postponed during a meeting with the southern mayor on Sunday.
The meeting was attended by senior leaders of the two organizations, including HM Anwar Parvez, the founding president of Kowab.
