The Association of Internet Service Providers of Bangladesh (ISPAB) and the Association of Cable Operators of Bangladesh (COAB) have vowed to take the Internet and cable television under their wing. They will remove the hanging wire and begin to run it underground at their expense starting Monday. Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has decided to suspend its removal operation for the time being by setting a deadline for November.
The agreement was reached during a meeting of ISPAB and KOAB leaders with Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh in DSCC’s Nagar Bhaban on Sunday.
In a briefing after the meeting, Mayor Tapas said that as of today the South City Street pendants will not be cut. At our meeting it was decided that they would connect the cables through the ground on their own and immediately cut the cables hanging above. And they have promised us that they will finish it next November. That’s why we won’t cut it.
The mayor also said that the city corporation was allowed to dig a road to remove the hanging wire and bring it underground, adding that the road will be repaired later at the expense of the city corporation.
ISPAB and Koab called a strike to demand an end to a mobile court operation launched last month to remove garbage hanging from two corporate areas of the city in Dhaka.
They had announced that they would shut down internet and cable TV services across the country from 10 a.m. M. A 1 p. M. Every day beginning Sunday, unless moving work was stopped without alternate arrangements. ISPAB and Coab have backed away from this decision as they have reached an agreement with City Corporation.
ISPAB president Abdul Hakim said they were no longer going to strike because their impeachment campaign was postponed during a meeting with the southern mayor.
The meeting was attended by senior leaders of the two organizations, including HM Anwar Parvez, the founding president of Kowab.
