Hefazat-e-Islami Deputy Secretary General Mamunul Haque has threatened to launch a nationwide strike if the government obstructs the strike.
Mamunul Haque said: “The government has commemorated Bangladesh’s Independence Day by killing Hefazat workers in yesterday’s protest.”
He said at a protest rally at the Baitul Mukarram mosque in the capital on Saturday, “The death of the Hefazat workers will be avenged. The government must compensate their families.
Mamunul Haque called the Hefazat workers to observe a strike tomorrow.
More than 3,000 activists under the banner of Hifazat-e-Islam staged a protest in front of the Baitul Mukarram Mosque yesterday in protest at the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh and the police took action against them in Dhaka, Chittagong and Brahmanbaria.
At that time Mamunul Haque urged the police to work as protectors of the people without serving any political party.
To monitor the law and order situation, the government has deployed members of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) in different parts of the country, including Dhaka.
The area around the site of the mosque by protesters and police reinforced security. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were also seen patrolling the area.
