He died at 7:40 p.m. Friday while undergoing treatment at Azgar Ali Hospital in Old Dhaka, said Maulana Abdur Rauf Yousufi, Vice President of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam, Dhaka Metropolitan Leader of Hefazat-e- Islam.

Maulana Altaf Hossain, deputy general secretary of the Alliance of Islamic Unity, said: “He was transferred to Dhaka by helicopter from the ICU of Chittagong Medical College Hospital and admitted to Azgar Ali Hospital earlier in the evening. He died shortly after being admitted to the hospital.

Mufti Faizullah, general secretary of the Alliance of Islamic Unity and deputy general secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, said that Shah Ahmad Shafi was 103 years old. For a long time he suffered from geriatric weakness such as diabetes, high blood pressure, shortness of breath.

The general director of Shafi Hathazari’s (Muhtamim) Islamic Madrasah Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Moinul was known for a long time by students of the country’s Qawmi madrasah.

As one of the oldest A Qawmi madrasas in the country, he ran the Qawmi madrasas in the country.

He was also acting as the Emir of Hefazat-e-Islam, who has been campaigning for the establishment of an Islamic government, relying on the leadership of Qawmi Madrasa.

But due to Shafi’s age, there was a recent dispute over the authority of the Hathazari Madrasa. Shafi resigned at a meeting of the Madrasa Management Committee (Shura Committee) on Thursday night amid internal conflict and student protests.

This marked the end of Ahmad Shafi’s long rule in Hathazari Madrasa. At that Shura Committee meeting, two teachers, including Shafi’s son, were released. Immediately after the meeting, Ahmed Shafi was sent by ambulance from Madrasa to Chittagong Medical College. He died the next day in Dhaka.

Shah Ahmad Shafi was born in the Pakhiartila village of Rangunia upazila in Chittagong. His father’s name was Barkam Ali and his mother was Moshammat Meherunnesa Begum. Ahmed Shafi is the father of two sons and three daughters.

Between his two sons, Anas Madani is the publicity secretary for Hefazat-e-Islam. Another is Maulana Mohammad Yusuf, director of the Pakhiartila Qawmi Madrasa.

Shafi’s education began at Sarafvata Madrasa in Rangunia. Then he studied at Patiyar Al Jamiatul Arabia Madrasa (Jiri Madrasa). In 1940 he was admitted to the Darul Uloom Moinul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari. In 1950 he went to Darul Uloom Deoband Madrasa in India, where he studied for four years.

Ahmed Shafi joined the position of Managing Director of Hathazari Madrasa in 1986. He has been in that position for 34 consecutive years since then.

Ahmad Shafi is revered by the country’s scholars and is the author of 13 books in Bengali and nine in Udur. However, Ahmed Shafi has always been criticized for his statements against women.

After the start of the Ganajagaran movement in 2013 to demand the trial of war criminals, Ahmed Shafi took to the field with Hefazat-e-Islam in opposition.
