Ashraful Islam had been in treatment for 13 years, referring to himself as an “eye specialist” on the sign. No one doubted for so long that he was not a doctor. During the RAB questioning, Ashraful admitted that he had received treatment under the false identity of an ophthalmologist for so many days.

The RAB arrested Keya Chashma Ghar’s Ashraful Islam at Bagatipara Upazila’s Dayrampur Bazar in Natore on Friday night. He was later taken to a mobile court and sentenced to two years in prison without pay, a fine of Taka 50,000 and a further three months in prison for non-payment. The mobile court has fined Akkas Ali, the owner of the glasses house, Taka 75,000 for cheating with patients.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Masud Parvez from Natore Radhab camp said Ashraful Islam had been coming to Dayrampur Bazar for eye treatment for 13 years despite being a doctor. His sign says “Specialist Physician and Manager” of Gurudaspur Eye Hospital. After learning of the incident, they arrested him at Keya Chashma’s home in Hatena. He later admitted in front of hundreds of people in the market that he had just passed high school. He never studied at any medical school.
