Testimony has started against 25 defendants in the murder case of Abrar Fahad Rabbi (22), a student at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
The trial of Dhaka 1 Court judge Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman began on Monday. At the time, all court officials and employees, including the judge, were wearing personal protective equipment. On the other hand, the 22 defendants in the case were behind.
The first testimony in the case began at 12 noon. At that moment, Abrar’s father stood to the left of the judge.
Then Abrar’s father testified. Barkat Ullah said: ‘I work for an NGO called Kashful. My son Abrar was a second year student at BUET’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I learned from people that some BUET students had beaten my son (Abrar) to death in a planned way. Upon receiving the news, I immediately came to Dhaka. Upon arriving in Dhaka, I spoke with the courtroom authorities, students, and teachers and learned from CCTV footage: The defendants in the room are Mehedi Hasan Russell, Muhtamim Fuhad, Maryland. Anik Sarkar, Mehedi Hasan Robin aka Shant, Ifti Musharraf Sakal, Md. Moniruzzaman Monir, Majedur Rahman, Md. Majedul Islam, Mohammad Mujahidul, Md. Tanvir Rahman, Hossain Mohammad Fahad, Md. Jisan, Maryland Akash, Maryland Shamim Billah, Maryland . Sadat, Md. Tanim, Md. Morshed, Md. Fuad, Jamie and some other unidentified BUET students called my son from Room No. 1011 at 8:05 pm on October 7, 2019 to kill him, and between Room No. 2011 and 2005 in the hallway until approximately 2:30 pm on October 8 of that year. He was brutally beaten with stamps, sticks and ropes on different parts of his body, for which my son died on the spot.
In the statement, Abrar’s father added: “The children left the body on the second floor of the corridor. Later, some students took my son’s body to the emergency department at Dhaka Medical College.” Then the doctor declared my son dead. When I arrived in Dhaka, I collected the information through the authorities in the hall, some of the students and teachers in the hall, collected information, CCTV footage, and spoke with my relatives. The defendants brutally murdered my son Abrar Fahad Rabbi with mutual aid due to the earlier enmity. I filed a case at the Chawkbazar Police Station. I took my son’s body to Kushtia with an authorization from the police station and went to the Dhaka medical morgue and took the body.
Then on October 7, I went to the scene with the investigating officer at 10:20 pm. While there, the investigating officer confiscated two CCTV cameras and a DVR from BUET’s office. My relatives Wadur Rafsan and Wahid were present with me as witnesses at that time.
From there I went upstairs to room number 1011 and 2011, 2005 of the Sher-e-Bangla room at BUET and the second floor. Later, I went to the place where Abrar’s body lay with the investigating officer and identified the scene of the incident. We later learned from the investigating officer, Ifat Mosharraf, Anik Sarkar, Mehedi Hasan, Moniruzzaman, Miftaul Islam, Md. Mujahid, Khandaker Tabakhkharul Islam Tanvir, Sadat have been arrested. I learned that the four detained defendants had made statements in court under article 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and all the defendants have described how they killed my son.
Abrar’s father said. Barkat Ullah said: ‘The defendant killed my son in accordance with the previously planned incident through the statements of the defendants and eyewitnesses. I want justice for the murder of my son. The accused tortured and inhumanely killed my son for about six hours. This is my statement. ‘
Abrar’s father was questioned by a lawyer
Attorneys for the defendants began questioning Abrar’s father at 3 pm after the hearing. The defendant was first questioned by the former BUET Chhatra League secretary for information and research. Anik Sarkar’s lawyer, Mahbub Ahmed.
Anik’s lawyer, Mahbub Ahmed: ‘When there was a government backed by Jamaat-Shibir, many BCL activists were tortured outside the Jamaat-Shibir hall. You know? ‘
Abrar’s father: ‘I don’t know’.
Anik’s Lawyer: “Why didn’t you come to testify in court on September 20?”
Abrar’s father: ‘I was sick’.
Anik’s lawyer: “Since that day, he has consulted with Jamaat-Shibir and memorized the statement of the case and has testified today.”
Abrar’s father: ‘That’s not true.’
Anik’s lawyer: “Did you know that your son made abusive comments against the government on Facebook two or four days before the Abrar incident?”
Abrar’s father: ‘I don’t know’.
Anik’s Lawyer: “Did you write the statement you sent?”
Abrar’s father: ‘No, I didn’t, it was typed from the police station.’
Anik’s Lawyer: ‘Were you with me when I wrote the case statement?’
Abrar’s father: ‘Yes, I was with you’.
Anik’s Lawyer: ‘Do you know the person who wrote your statement? Do you know his name? ‘
Abrar’s father: ‘No, I don’t know the name.’
Anik’s lawyer: “You said in the statement of the case, some children have taken your son to Dhaka Medical, can you name them?”
Abrar’s father: ‘No, I can’t say the name.’
Anik’s lawyer: ‘Did you know that your son has spoken on Facebook saying that the current government is flattering India?’
Abrar’s father: ‘No, I don’t know.’
Anik’s Lawyer: ‘Did Abrar Ever Join Jamaat-e-Islami?’
Abrar’s father: ‘No, my son did not join Jamaat-e-Islami.’
Attorney Mahbub Ahmed then completed the questioning on Anik’s behalf. As the interrogation of the other defendants did not end today, the judge has set the date for the interrogation tomorrow.
On the night of October 6 last year, Abrar was beaten to death by the leaders and activists of the university’s Chhatra League in a room at BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall. Abrar’s father filed a murder case at the Chawkbazar police station on October 7, charging 19 people with the incident.
25 defendants in the case
The defendants in the case are: BUET Chhatra League, expelled general secretary Mehedi Hasan Russell, deputy general secretary Muhtamim Fouad, secretary of information and investigation. Anik Sarkar alias Apu, organization secretary Mehedi Hasan Robin alias Shant, Legal Undersecretary Amit Saha, Social Services Undersecretary Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, Sports Secretary Md. Meftahul Islam Zion, Publications and Books Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed Munna, Muntasir Al Jamie activist, Khandaker Tabakhkharul Islam Tanvir, Maryland. Mujahidur Rahman, Md. Moniruzzaman Monir, Akash Hossain, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Maryland. Majedur Rahman Majed, Shamim Billah, Muaz alias Abu Hurairah, ASM Nazmus Sadat, roommate of Abrar Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Morshed Amatya Islam, SM Mahmud Setu, Muhammad Morshed-uz-Zaman Mondal alias Miz and Mujtaba Rafid.
Among the accused are Muhammad Morshed-uz-Zaman Mandal alias Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi alias Tanim and Mujtaba Rafid. The remaining 22 have been arrested. Eight people have given confessional statements in court in this case.
Case details
The DB police inspector (unarmed) investigates the case on November 13 last year. Wahiduzzaman filed a charge sheet against 25 people. Then, on February 17 this year, the father of the late Abrar Fahad requested the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office (PP) to send the case to court for a speedy trial. Barkat Ullah. On March 12, the Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Anisul Haque, approved the dossier to send the murder case to court soon.
But due to the coronavirus, the trial of the case has long been closed.
On September 15, the court ordered charges in the case and ordered uninterrupted testimony. Part of her was scheduled for September 20 to testify in the case. But the plaintiff’s father Abrar said. Barkat Ullah asked for time as he was unable to testify at the time because he suffered from jaundice and was seriously ill. After the hearing, the judge set a date for the testimony.
