A woman was killed by her husband in the capital after witnessing an affair with a domestic worker, police said. The defendant tactfully rented a room in a residential hotel in Motijheel. He later called his wife, killed her, and fled.

The deceased was identified as Yasmin Akhter Soma, 32. Her husband Abul Kalam is a driver by profession. Motijheel OC Yasir Arafat Police Station told Kaler Kantha on Sunday night that an attempt was being made to arrest Kalam.

Police said they recovered an unidentified body from room 226 of the Insaf Residential Hotel in Motijheel on Saturday night. The body was covered with a handkerchief and black spots. The body was subsequently sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. Soma’s sister Nasreen Begum and her brother Alauddin Faraji went to the morgue yesterday and identified the body as Soma.

Motijheel Police Deputy Inspector Abdul Jalil said Abul Kalam and his son went up to room 234 of the Insaf hotel on October 13. He told hotel authorities that his wife was angry and had come looking for him. Later, he changed rooms and went up to room 226, since he had found his wife. Then came his wife Soma.

At some point on Saturday, Kalam fled with her son. At night, while cleaning a hotel boy’s room, he saw Soma’s body. The police recovered the body from the scene after receiving information from the hotel authorities. Sources at the morgue said that Soma’s viscera had been collected and sent for analysis. The exact cause of death will be known when the report arrives.

Soma is the youngest of three sisters and a brother. Soma’s sister Nasreen said that Kalam-Soma has a son named Safayet (10). They lived in the Narinda area. Six or seven months ago, Soma saw the maid’s immoral relationship with Kalam at home. This started a fight between them. Later, Kalam moved in with her son. Soma went to Nasrin’s house in Savar.

Soma arrived in Dhaka from Savar last Friday morning. He said he would take the clothes from home. His mobile phone was found turned off after that night. On Saturday, Kalam called Nasrin and threatened her, saying that Soma was at the hotel.
