The situation in the Hathazari Sadar area remained tense on Saturday (March 26) when four people were killed in clashes between police and Hefazat activists and madrassa students protesting the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A large number of Madrasa students have been blocking the Chittagong-Khagrachhari highway since this morning. The RAB and the police, as well as the BGB, have been deployed to prevent adverse incidents.
A meeting between Hefazat leaders and senior police officials was held on Friday evening (March 26), mediated by local MP Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, but the problem remained unresolved.
Senior officials including MP Anisul Islam Mahmud and Chittagong Range DIG Anwar Hossain and District Police Superintendent SM Rashidul Haque have been stationed at the Hathazari Police Station since 9 am on Saturday.
It was seen at the scene around 12 noon that most of the shops in Hathazari Bazar were closed. Large numbers of RABs and police officers are stationed at the bus stop on the south side of the barricaded police station building. Members of BGB have taken up positions in and around the police station.
Madrasa students are stationed on the Chittagong-Nazirhat-Khagrachhari road with bamboo and tin barricades in the Tribeni confectionery area south of Hathazari Madrasa.
MP Anisul Islam Mahmud said the two sides had a discussion last night. Madrasa students have made 5 demands. These are: the autopsy of the four dead must be carried out correctly, their janaza burial must not be tied up, arrangements must be made for the proper treatment of the wounded and measures must be taken against the police officers responsible for the shooting.
The deputy said: ‘We have accepted your demands. But the students are not lifting the blockade.
