Dhaka: Haji Mohammad Selim, Member of Parliament (MP) from the Dhaka-6 constituency, is in a new discussion because of his son Irfan Selim. The ruling party deputy has made headlines due to various controversial activities in the past.
An analysis of the past shows that Haji Selim’s name is involved in various negative activities including terrorism, corruption and abuse of power. His rise is by way of unjust irregularities. And he has used politics as a “ladder” to promote his own promotion. That is why he has chosen the “politics of power”.
In 1996, Haji Selim, the then district commissioner of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation, wanted to participate in the national elections as a deputy. But his own BNP party did not nominate him and he joined the Awami League. The Awami League nominated him and he was elected deputy. However, he lost the 2001 elections to BNP candidate Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu.
Haji Mohammad Selim took control of a large part of old Dhaka, including the capital’s Lalbagh and Chawkbazar, since he was ward commissioner. There are reports that it has built a market by occupying three corridors of Jagannath University. And after becoming a deputy, he became reckless. According to the locals, the controversial representative of the town used to control the area by forming a cadre force.
During the BNP and the interim government, at least 120 cases were filed against Haji Selim. The cases were brought on charges of murder, attempted murder, torture, robbery and corruption, and illicit income. His wife Gulshan Ara has always been assisted in her various crimes. In April 2008, Selim was imprisoned for 13 years for acquiring assets worth Tk 26 crore. His wife Gulshan Ara was imprisoned for 3 years for keeping these assets.
Son Irfan Selim has been arrested for beating a naval officer. They gave him 18 months in jail. Haji Selim has been in hiding since the night of the incident.
In addition to gaining power, he has also used politics to get out of the trap of the law. Although Haji Selim joined the Awami League from BNP in 1996, he was unable to remain loyal to the party. However, he was not nominated by the Awami League in the 2014 national elections and was chosen as a ‘rogue candidate’. Haran lost the post of Deputy Secretary General of the Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League. Haji Selim showed surprise by defeating Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin of the Awami League in the elections without BNP. In 2016, he again defeated the Oikya Front candidate in the Dhaka-6 constituency in the Awami League nomination.
In the last election of Dhaka South City Corporation, the Awami League did not appoint Irfan Selim, Selim’s son, to the position of ‘District Councilor’ in District 30. There too, the boy was chosen as a “rebel candidate” .
According to the locals, Haji Selim has made his son the winner by using the influence of being a parliamentarian and intimidating voters.
Drugs, alcohol and beer such as Yaba, guns full of bullets, illegal wireless devices and horrible torture cells were found in this father and son home.
On condition of anonymity, Haji Selim, an ordinary jewelry merchant in Medina Tower, told banglanews that Selim and his family have absolute control over the Chawkbazar area. No one in the area has the courage to speak out against them. We do business with renting a store in your building. But it is not enough to say how his people treat us. Not only in his building, but also in the surrounding markets and the merchants in the building have to pay regular fees to their people. Otherwise, many of these buildings would have been taken upstairs. So far I have only heard rumors that those who are brought up are punished. Today I discovered that there is a torture cell. No one can park their car or park their bicycle on public roads around their home, business or market. Our clients come to these markets and are harassed by their people.
Haji Selim could not be reached for comment. He was not found in the home where the RAB raided his home.
