Greece wants an arms embargo on Turkey, unlike Germany

Greece has demanded an arms embargo from Turkey over its dispute with the eastern Mediterranean. However, Germany has objected to this claim. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas made the remarks in an interview with a DPA news agency on Tuesday.

He said in an interview that the arms embargo on Turkey was strategically inappropriate. This is not easy to do as a member of NATO. Turkey has easily bought missiles from Russia without having a US missile system.

The German foreign minister said the dispute with Turkey over the Eastern Mediterranean could be resolved through talks. Of course, we believe that conflict resolution is possible and that we, as NATO partners, cannot forever exclude them from the issue of arms cooperation.

Turkey’s state agency Anadolu reports that Greece has demanded an arms embargo on Ankara amid tensions in the Middle East at a recent meeting of European Union leaders. However, most European leaders have opposed arms or economic sanctions.

Greece has been embroiled in a dispute with Turkey over the longest continental coastline in the Middle East. Greece and Greek Cyprus have rejected the coastline claimed by Turkey. On the other hand, Turkey, Cyprus and Turkey claim that their sovereign rights are being violated.

In recent months, Ankara has been exploring underground fuels in the Middle East. This caused tension between Turkey and Greece. Regarding the coastal border, Ankara says Turkey is willing to sit on international law, good relations with its neighbors, talks and compromises to solve these regional problems.
