BBC Bangla published a report in its online edition on April 22 titled ‘Coronavirus: Separate Hospital for VIP Treatment’.
Additional secretary of the Department of Health Services (Administration Division) said. The report was quoted by BBC Bangla quoting Habibur Rahman Khan.
The government says that “additional secretary Habibur is not involved in any decision or process.”
An Information Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told bdnews24.com:
“The Information Department will not publish the protest letter sent to the BBC for political reasons. The letter also called on all media, including BBC Bangla, to analyze and publish news based on information.”
After receiving a protest from the Chief Information Officer, BBC Bangla republished the report online under the title “Separate VIP Hospital in Corona: argument from the Ministry of Health, denial by the Ministry of Information”.
The next day, Health Minister Zahid Malek protested the report. Later, BBC Bangla released a revised report titled ‘Coronavirus: There is no separate health system for VIP in Bangladesh’.
Many people criticized the government via social media by citing this BBC Bangla report.
The government later said that a separate hospital was not being established to treat VIPs infected with the coronavirus.
