The Superior Court observed that an official below the rank of Co-Secretary must request permission from his own ministry, as well as the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Finance to make an official visit abroad.
The court issued the order to prevent misuse of government funds for foreign travel.
Deputy Attorney General Sheikh Saifuzzaman confirmed the matter to The Daily Star on Friday.
He said the high court Judge Jubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Judge Kazi Jinat Haque made the comments in an observation Thursday following a 2016 court petition.
He said the car petition was filed by a fog light importer named Johnny Corporation.
Citing the High Court’s observation, he said: “Government officials below the rank of deputy secretary must concentrate on their work in the country and cannot take vacations during official visits abroad.” After returning to the country from abroad, they must inform the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Finance about the visit and the expenses.
Sheikh Saifuzzaman said that government officials currently only have to ask their ministries for permission to make official visits abroad. Once the full text of the court’s verdict is released, more details about the High Court’s observation will be known.
