A person named Khalil was killed and five others injured in a clash between two groups in Gopalpur in Tangail during the mayoral election campaign. The killings took place around 8 pm on Monday (February 8) in clashes with activists and supporters of the Awami League candidate ship. Khalil is said to be an employee of the rebel Awami League mayoral candidate, engineer KM Gias Uddin.
Gopalpur Police Station OC Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the news.
Witnesses said the ship’s crew seized an easy bike used to promote the coconut tree symbol at the Konabari bazaar last night. The ship’s election office was vandalized in a dispute. The ship’s worker and municipal employee Masud Hossain was injured. It led to attacks and vandalism at the home and shops of independent mayoral candidate KM Gias Uddin in the municipal city.
When news spread that Gias Uddin had been blocked by ship symbol workers at his home in the city, hundreds of workers and supporters marched from his hometown of Dubail to the municipal city with sticks. The two sides clashed when the ship’s crew stopped them at the Pakua gas station area on the way. Several people, including Khalil, were injured at the time. Khalil was taken to the Gopalpur Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors pronounced him dead. The deceased was identified as Khalil, son of Nasim Ali from Atapara village in Dubail municipality.
Residents of Dubail village set tires on fire at the local bus stop and blocked the road until 9:30 pm Monday in protest of Khalil’s murder. Upazila Nirbahi’s officer, Parvez Mallick, said additional police officers have been deployed to control the situation.
