Pranab Mukherjee was born on December 11, 1935 in Mirati, Birbhum district of West Bengal. His father, Kamda Kinkar Mukherjee, was associated with the National Congress. He began his career in 1973 teaching at a small university near Calcutta. At that time he also worked as a journalist in a newspaper called ‘Desh Dak’ for some time.
Pranab Mukherjee started his career in politics but not in the hands of the Indian National Congress. In 1979, he was elected for the first time to the Rajya Sabha (upper house of the Indian Parliament) of the independent party, the Bangladesh Congress. Later, however, the party merged with Congress. He resigned in 2004 after serving four more terms as a member of the Rajya Sabha. That same year he won the Lok Sabha (lower house of parliament) elections. He resigned before standing in the 2012 presidential election. He was later elected the country’s thirteenth president and served until 2016. In his long political career, he has also served as India’s Minister of Trade, Foreign Affairs, Defense and Finance in several occasions.
Pranab became a loyal soldier of Indira Gandhi by joining parliamentary politics. In 1975, he became president of the West Bengal State Congress for the first time. When Sonia Gandhi was elected president of the Central Congress in 1998-99, Pranab became Secretary General. She has spent 36 years of her political life in Parliament. Corruption has never touched him from the peak of power. He was one of the representatives of the Bengalis in Delhi.
