Interpol is looking for Birendradev Dixit, a 69-year-old self-proclaimed religious leader from Delhi, who has been accused of raping multiple minors and women over the years. The international police agency has issued a red notice against him because the Indian police were unable to catch him. He is believed to have fled India and moved to neighboring Nepal.
His ashram is in the Rohini area below the Vijay Bihar Police Station in North Delhi. There were accusations against him: the minor from the ashram had to declare his voluntary stay on bail as soon as he became an adult.
In December 2016, six people were rescued from a fortified ashram called a spiritual university in the area. Most of those rescued were minors. The Delhi Police launched an operation against Birendra that year on the basis of complaints from some minors. Members of the Women’s Commission also participated in that campaign.
A search of the ashram revealed that there were small cells that did not receive sunlight. The girls were held captive in such cells. The physical torture for rape continued day after day in the name of showing the spiritual path. The female residents were not allowed to visit their families while in the ashram.
The influential West Bengal news outlet Anandabazar reported that an IWC investigation into the entire incident was launched by order of the Delhi High Court after the raid. The Central Intelligence Agency issued a surveillance notice against Birendra in February next year. In June 2019, the CBI filed a charge sheet against Birendra for allegedly raping a minor.
The intelligence agency claimed that Birendra raped the girl in 1999 at her ashram in Rohini and Kampil in Delhi, including Uttar Pradesh. The CBI also announced a 5 lakh rupee reward for information on fugitive ‘Godman’ Birendra. But it was not possible to arrest Birendra.
According to the report, the CBI has enlisted the help of Interpol in arresting Birendra. However, he could not be arrested even after Interpol issued the blue notice. On this occasion, the international police agency has issued a red notice against the accused.
