Getting the party’s nomination means a sure deputy!

Dhaka: Many leaders and activists in the Awami League think that getting the party’s nomination means ‘becoming a deputy’. Although the members of parliament are chosen by means of elections.

But the leaders and workers of the ruling Awami League no longer see the matter that way. They think that getting the party’s nomination means being a member of parliament for sure! As a result, the trend to buy application forms for party nominations has increased.

The reason for this is the lack of competition in elections. Because in the upcoming by-elections, it is not sure whether the BNP or any other strong opposition will compete, but even if they do, they will be strong. As a result, the Awami League candidate will win in the end.

The Electoral Commission recently announced the date of the by-elections for 3 vacant positions. By-elections in two more constituencies may soon be announced. The ‘crowd’ of leaders and activists joining the nomination race around these by-elections is striking. In addition, within the party the desire of leaders and workers to get the nomination is discussed.

Recently, Awami League party nomination forms were sold in search of candidates for the by-elections for these seats. 141 leaders and activists have purchased and submitted application forms to become party candidates in these 5 seats. Among them, the largest number of 57 applicants have filed forms in a Dhaka constituency. In other words, each of them hopes to be nominated by the party!

Policy makers at the Awami League have found several reasons for this trend. Speaking with them, it was learned that this tendency has been created among the leaders and workers because of the assurance of an easy victory in the nomination, the low cost or winning the elections, the lack of qualified candidates, the personal influence in the party and the lack of party politics.

According to sources, 34 people have bought nomination forms in Naogaon-6, 3 in Sirajganj-1, 28 in Pabna-4, 20 in Dhaka-5 and 57 in Dhaka-17. In the Eleventh Parliamentary Election, 4,023 people bought Awami League nominations for 300 seats, representing an average of 13 people per seat. But the number of candidates running for by-elections in 5 electoral districts is more than double than at that time. On average, more than 26 people have purchased nomination forms to participate in the by-elections in these 5 constituencies.

According to the policy-making level leaders of the Awami League, he is sure to become a deputy if he gets a party nomination or if he can become a party candidate. There is no need to worry about victory. Because whether or not the BNP participates in the elections, it will not be able to build strong competition. If BNP does not participate or does not compete, the money will not be spent. There are so many leaders and activists showing interest in some seats, as there are no influential party candidates in terms of qualifications. They later used the party’s nomination request as a personal political achievement. They especially obtain positions in the party or take advantage of various political advantages by discrediting these potential candidates.

In addition, it is a democratic right of every member of the party to buy the form or run to be a candidate.

There is no restriction in the party constitution in this regard or there is no policy in case of application for candidacy. Due to these reasons, the number of applicants is increasing at an enormous rate. As a result, it is seen that they have no political experience, no contribution to the party, they have become members of the ward committee, the general members of the Chhatra League fraternal organization are also buying nomination forms.

Due to this trend, politicians think that there is unrest among party leaders. At the same time, they believe that there should be a policy in this regard.

Kazi Zafarullah, a member of the Awami League presidium and a member of the party’s parliamentary board, told banglanews: “No one can be prohibited from buying forms. Everyone on the team has the right to buy nominations. They think that it is easy to become a deputy only after getting the party’s nomination. It is unclear whether the BNP will go to the polls or compete seriously. If there is no competition, no money will be spent. Many people also buy forms to make their CV heavier. However, in case of nomination, the party’s parliamentary board nominates the eligible candidate after verification and selection. “

When asked about this, Awami League Deputy General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim told banglanews: “The Awami League is a democratic party. Everyone has the right to request a nomination. However, there are more applications due to the lack of qualified candidates. Defender Sahara Khatun was a deputy in the Dhaka-17 constituency. There are more candidates in this seat because there is no candidate equal to her. “

“Those who are loyal to the party’s ideology, disinterested, worthy and believe in the spirit of the liberation war become candidates for the Awami League. This is our party’s policy that no one from racekar, militant ideology will be nominated. “These issues will be discussed more strictly in the future. A strict policy is needed so that no one can tarnish the party’s image. The issue will be discussed at the next meeting of the party’s executive committee.” He added.
