Germany searches for weapons on a Turkish freighter bound for Libya. The Turkish government has reacted angrily to the Germans.

Germany claims the ship was searched to see if weapons were being supplied to Libya in defiance of UN sanctions.

“What Germany has done is completely illegal,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement. They have no right to search this way. They searched by force. We vigorously protest against it.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has summoned the ambassadors of Germany, the European Union and Italy in Ankara and has condemned the “illegal act”.

According to the German Defense Ministry, the name of the Turkish ship is Rosalin. A search message was sent to the ship from a German helicopter. There was no response from the ship. The search was then carried out from the helicopter.

However, the search was ordered by the Irini mission command in Rome. The mission monitors whether weapons are being supplied to Libya.
