Gas lines in the capital Capital

The capital’s gas supply runs on expired risk pipelines. As a result, there are leaks in the connecting line, accidents happen, people get burned. The pipeline is like a death trap! Most hellish accidents are caused by gas leaks or explosions. The number of deaths due to fires, arson or gas suffocation has become alarming.

According to the fire service, about 30 percent of fire accidents in the capital are due to gas pipeline leaks. In the last year, gas has been responsible for around 1,000 small and large fires. Titus Gas says it is important to replace expired tubing. But there is no action. Experts say the fires and deaths are not stopping due to negligence by authorities, the delay in repairing the old line and a lack of responsibility.

Titas and DTCL formed an investigative committee after a major accident. One of the committee’s recommendations is to conduct a leak study regularly. But from the Narayanganj explosion it is clear that the implementation did not see the light of day. Khandaker Salek, a former DTCL DGM currently residing in Australia, said more catastrophic disasters could ensue if the lines are not repaired. Lines that existed in the 70s and 80s in the distribution system need to be depressurized and replaced.

Energy expert and professor at Bangladesh University of Engineering. Tamim said that the city of Dhaka has been turned into a gas chamber. If there is a big earthquake, nobody really knows what will happen to this capital, which has become a gas chamber. In this regard, said a director of Titas Gas, many of Titus’ pipes are very old. Because of this leak is happening. We are working on immediate repairs. Furthermore, in the long term, the old pipeline has been replaced to avoid this problem.

In this regard, the Minister of State for Energy, Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, said that the government is working on a large project to remove old gas pipelines and install new ones to streamline the gas distribution system.

Energy expert Shamsul Alam said 5,000 of the 6,000 kilometers of pipelines have become obsolete, with leak after leak, explosions and fires.

Titas is known to have a total of 12,253 kilometers of pipelines. The number of subscribers is more than 20 lakh. Of the total pipelines in Dhaka, there are 6,000. There are Titas pipelines around Dhaka, namely Narsingdi, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Manikganj, Gazipur, Tangail, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Sherpur, Jamalpur and Kishoreganj.
