Workers at a garment factory in Ashulia, Dhaka, staged a protest Thursday morning demanding wage arrears and the Eid bonus. At the same time, agitated workers tore apart the factory. Later, the police entered the factory and dispersed the workers. Several workers were injured at the time.
Speaking to industrial police and workers, it emerged that several thousand Medlar Apparels Limited workers in the Narsinghpur area began work on Thursday morning. Around 8.15 in the morning, they wanted to know from the authorities why the salary for April was not received in the mobile phone number. But after failing to get a proper answer to this question from the authorities, they immediately stopped working and left the factory’s main building. They then closed the front door from the inside and began protesting inside the border wall.
At that time, they demanded payment of April’s salary and the Eid bonus. In one stage, agitated workers tore apart the factory. Later, the police came through the door and dispersed the workers and left.
Some workers said they did not receive their April pay until Thursday. They were assured that they would pay their wages on their mobile phone development number on Wednesday afternoon with a few time points. But it was not given. Also, they were not given last year’s vacation allowance and this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr voucher. This caused anger among the workers. Out of this anger, the workers protested and destroyed.
Some other workers who participated in the agitation said that the police went through the door with the help of a machine around 11:30 pm and dispersed them by throwing tear gas projectiles and hot water. Frightened, many workers climbed the walls and many ran out the door. Several workers were injured in the race.
In this regard, an industrial police official said that the workers protested and destroyed the factory without receiving their salary last month. Later the door was cut and they scattered.
