Gang rape in MC College dorm – four of 8 defendants arrested

SYLHET: Law enforcement has arrested four of the eight defendants in a case of gang-raping a woman while her husband was detained in the dormitory of the Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet.

One of them was arrested in Chhatak in Sunamganj and three others in Madhabpur, Shayestaganj and Nabiganj in Habiganj district in a raid from morning to night on Sunday (September 26).

The main defendant in the case is Saifur Rahman, 28, the son of Tahid Miah from Chandaipara village in Balaganj upazila de Sylhet and a resident of the MC College fifth block shelter. The third defendant in the case is Shah Mohammad from Bagunipara in Habiganj Sadar. Jahangir Miah’s son, Shah Mohammad, resident of room 205, block 6, MC College Hostel. Mahbubur Rahman Rony, 25, is the son of Kanu Lashkar from Atgram in Zakiganj upazila from Sylhet.

The main defendant in the case, Saifur Rahman, 28, was arrested by Sunamganj’s Chhatak police on Sunday morning as he tried to flee to India in disguise, police said. A team led by city detective Anwar Hossain arrested Arjun from the Mantala area of ​​Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj this morning.

Another defendant in the case, Shah Mahbubur Rahman, alias Rony (25), was arrested by the RAB in the Anantapur area of ​​the city of Habiganj around 8pm on Sunday. Although the matter was not confirmed by the RAB, Rony’s relative, Chunarughat Upazila Mirashi Union Parishad, was president. Ayub Ali confirmed this information to banglanews.

Ronnie surrendered to the RAB at the home of a defender in the Anantapur area. Ronnie is an occasional student of the Master of English at MC College. He lived in room 250 of the seventh dorm block.

Later, around 9:30 pm, a team of the Habiganj District Detective Police (DB) arrested Rabiul Islam, defendant in Ejahar No. 5 of the gangrape case, from Inatganj in Nabiganj Upazila.

Furthermore, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum (25) from the Gachbari area of ​​Kanaighat upazila de Sylhet and Tarekul Islam Tarek (28), a resident of the Major Tila Dipika residential area, son of the late Rafiqul Islam from the Nisarg-56 house in Sunamganj Sadar, they are still on the run.

Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Sylhet Shah Paran Police Station, told banglanews that he learned of the nightly arrest of defendants Rony and Rabiul. Saifur and Arjun, who were arrested this morning, are being questioned in police custody.

Sylhet City Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Jyotirmoy Sarkar told banglanews that two defendants were arrested on Sunday. His questioning continues. I learned of the nightly detention of two more defendants. Efforts are also being made to arrest the fugitives.

On Friday (September 25), six BCL leaders and activists allegedly raped a woman while her husband was detained in the MC College dormitory. Upon receiving the news, police rescued the couple from the bedroom at around 10:30 pm. Later, the raped girl was admitted to the OCC Center of the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

According to police and local sources, the newlyweds went to MC College on Friday afternoon in a private car. In the afternoon, six MC College BCL leaders and activists grabbed the husbands and took them to the dormitory and beat them first. He later gang-raped his wife while holding her husband captive. Each of the BCL leaders lives in the dormitory. They are followers of the leader of the Awami League, Advocate Ranjit Sarkar Group, based in Tilagarh.

The rapist’s husband filed the case (21 (9) 2020) at the city’s Shahparan police station on Saturday morning, naming six people and charging two or three others.

Police also recovered weapons from Saifur’s room after the incident. Deputy Inspector (SI) Milton Sarkar from Shahparan Police Station brought another case in the incident. He filed a case (No. 22 (9) 2020) charging Chhatra League cadre Saifur Rahman.
