France has closed 63 mosques and Islamic schools as part of the fight against “extremist Islam,” said Gerald Durman, the country’s interior minister.

Campaigns are taking place across France following French President Emmanuel Macro’s announcement of a fight against “Islamist separatism”.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the French Interior Minister confirmed that nine stores had been closed in the Herald region, including a mosque and a school.

He also said that hundreds of foreign nationals would be deported from France, adding that 231 foreigners living in France would be deported, including 180 prisoners.

The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between the Muslim community living in France and the country’s government over various issues.

Earlier, French President Nicolas Sarkozy had said that Islam was in a “crisis”.

Macro added that the government will take strict measures to control various schools and religious institutions in the country by controlling foreign funding for mosques.

Macro also confirmed legislation to control Muslims in France.
