Police arrested three people for allegedly tying the hands and feet of a fourth grade student in Bakerganj, Barisal. Two of them were placed in preventive detention and one was handed over to the family for being a minor, police said.

The victim is a 9-year-old fourth-year student at Sukhinilganj Public Primary School in Bakerganj Upazila. He was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

The detainees were identified as Sahabuddin Sagar, 40, Helal Chowkidar, 25 and a 14-year-old boy from Nilganj village in Bakerganj upazila.

Bakerganj Police Station OC Abul Kalam said the boy’s father’s home was in Nalciti upazila of Jhalokati, but he lived at his grandfather’s home in Bakerganj village in Nilganj. On Thursday afternoon, neighbors tortured him for stealing a mobile phone.

The OC further said that they poured water on his face, tied his hands and feet, and wrapped a towel around his face while he was trapped in the bathroom. He was rescued in critical condition and admitted for the first time to the Upazila Health Complex. He was later admitted to Barisal Medical College Hospital on Friday night for advanced treatment.

The boy’s father, Bashir Hawladar, filed a case against the five at the Bakerganj police station on Friday night. Three of the accused have been arrested. The OC said that efforts were being made to arrest the others.
