Former Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan has been sentenced to one year in jail by the ACC in a case brought by the ACC for embezzlement of Tk 49 lakh. In addition, he has been fined 50 lakh Tk. Judge Syed Kamal Hossain of the Dhaka Divisional Court of Special Judges delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
Rafiqul Islam, the court presenter, confirmed the information at first glance. He said that the court had sentenced Professor MA Mannan to one year in prison in the ACC case. After imprisonment, the accused requested bail on condition of appeal to the High Court. The court granted MA Mannan bail after hearing the case.
ACC prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir told Prothom Alo that MA Mannan was sentenced to one year in prison in the case. However, a defendant named Golam Kibria was acquitted. He was an employee of the City Corporation.
According to the record, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against MA Mannan on June 23, 2016, alleging that he had embezzled Tk 49,1,848 of false vouchers and deficient funds during his term as mayor from 2013 to 2015. A complaint was filed. Charge sheet against Mannan on January 12, 2016. The court filed charges against Mannan and two others on January 17 of last year.
