He was arrested Wednesday night in the Vaina area of Magura city, police said.
Jhenaidah Police Superintendent Muntasirul Islam told a news conference at noon that the main defendant in the case, Jamirul Magura, was preparing to flee the area.
The girl’s mother had filed a case alleging rape, but the doctor said the autopsy showed no signs of rape. Police said they have not yet received the autopsy report.
The main defendant in the case, Jamirul Islam, is the ex-husband of the deceased girl’s sister. They got divorced a year ago. It is known that Jamirul did not marry even though his sister remarried.
Shailkupa OC Jahangir Alam Police Station said the girl was rescued from her home on the night of October 1 and taken to Kushtia General Hospital. There, the doctor declared him dead. The following day, his mother filed a case of rape and incitement to suicide at the Shailkupa police station, naming eight people and charging four or five others.
Citing the case, the OC said that Jamirul raped the girl the night of the incident and that the other defendant helped her. Because of this, the girl committed suicide by not being able to bear the pain and humiliation.
The OC said police have so far arrested five people, including the main defendant in the case. An autopsy was performed at Kushtia Sadar Hospital. However, the report has yet to reach the police.
OC Jahangir Alam further said that Jamirul was handed over to the court and in pre-trial detention for seven days. The court granted a preventive detention of three days.
Judicial magistrate Rafiqul Islam also denied bail to the defendants, the OC said.
Meanwhile, Kushtia Medical College Hospital Resident Medical Officer Tapash Kumar Sarkar said Monday night that the autopsy report showed no signs of rape; Signs of suicide were found.
