Clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan have raged for days in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region in the southern Caucasus. There have been tensions between the two countries over the region in the past, as well as military conflicts, but all were limited.
Large cannons, tanks, missiles and drones are being used in the war, which began abruptly on Sunday morning, September 26. After a week of continuous fighting, the Azerbaijani army has liberated seven more areas from the Armenian occupation after the city of Madagiz. The announcement was made by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on Saturday (October 3).
He said in a Twitter message that the Azerbaijani army had liberated from the enemy the villages of Talish in the Tartar district of Nagarno Karabakh, Mehdili, Choksirli, Ashagi Maralian, Shebi, Gaijag and Ashagi Abdurrahmanyali in the Jibril district through bloody battles.
Earlier, President Aliyev announced that Azerbaijani troops had raised the flag in the city of Madagiz (liberated from the enemy). “Today, the Azerbaijani army raised our flag over Madagiz,” he wrote on Twitter. Madagiz is ours now.
The Armenian and Azerbaijani armed forces clashed again on September 26 in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
It should be noted that Armenia and Azerbaijan were part of the then Soviet Union until 1991. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, they became two independent states. The two countries have been at odds over the Nagorno-Karabakh region for the past four decades. Nagarno-Karabakh is an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan. Although it is controlled by ethnic Armenians.
Meanwhile, Armenia said 51 more soldiers had died. A total of 206 soldiers have been reported killed in the country. Azerbaijan, however, claims that Armenia has suffered many more casualties. But they are hiding it.
Baku has yet to comment on how much damage has been done to the Azerbaijani army. However, the country reported the deaths of some 30 civilians.
Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani media reported that the Armenians have started to leave the occupied Azerbaijani territory. They reportedly gathered in the center of Khabaredi city in Nagarno-Karabakh and departed for Armenia.
According to the RIA Novosti news agency, the cities of Khojavend and Agad have been evacuated.
The two former Soviet countries have been embroiled in regional disputes since the 1990s. In 2016, it took a serious shape. In this context, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has called for an immediate end to the conflict.
A spokesman for the secretary-general said in a statement that Guterres had called on both sides to immediately end the fighting. He also called for a meaningful discussion without delay. Source: Daily Sabah
