Five people sentenced to death in case of organized rape

CourtA court sentenced five defendants to death in a case of organized rape following their abduction in Tangail. Judge Khaleda Yasmin of the Tangail Court for the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children delivered the verdict at 11 am on Thursday (October 15). Tangail court inspector Tanvir Ahmed confirmed the information.

The ruling came shortly after the government amended the law to allow the death penalty for rape.

Sanjit and Gopi Chandra Sheel, residents of the district’s Madhupur upazila, were present in court when the verdict was announced. The other three defendants escaped on bail.

Tanvir Ahmed said: “In January 2012, a woman was kidnapped and gang-raped in Bhunapur district. A court judge has sentenced five defendants to death in the case. During this time, the court has awarded one lakh of rupees to each defendant. I have not received the copy of the verdict yet, if I get the copy, the details will be known.
