The five areas of the sanctuary are 100 km from the lower Meghna river basin from Shatnal of Chandpur district to Char Alexander of Laxmipur district, 90 km from Madanpur / Char Ilisha of Bhola district to Char Pial, 90 km from Shahbazpur tributary of the Meghna river, from Veduria of Bhola district to Patuakhali district The river covers an area of ​​about 100 km, between Naria and Vederganj upazilas of Shariatpur district and Matlab upazila of Chandpur district, about 20 km from Padma river and about 72 km from the Kalabadar, Gazaria and Meghna rivers of Hijla, Mehendiganj and Barisal Sadar upazilas of Barisal district. Every year for two months in March and April, catching all kinds of fish, including hilsa, is completely prohibited at the sanctuary.

Confirming the matter in a press release, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock said that catching all types of fish, including hilsa, in the hilsa sanctuaries during the closed season is a punishable offense. Violators will be punished with a minimum of 1 year up to a maximum of 2 years in rigorous prison or a fine of up to five thousand rupees or both.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has allocated a total of 19,502 metric tons of VGF rice at a rate of 40 kg per month and 60 kg for two months to 2.43,006 fishermen who refuse to purchase jatka during the closed season.
