Rajshahi: Due to the unfavorable weather in Rajshahi, around 617 metric tons of fish have died due to the oxygen crisis in the water. In three days, 4,930 fish farmers in different Rajshahi upazilas have lost around Tk 14 crore.

Fisheries officials said it rained in Rajshahi on Tuesday and Wednesday. The sky was cloudy. Due to this deficiency of oxygen occurs in water. The fish in the pond began to float dead. Fish in the pond have also died in the districts around Rajshahi. Farmers have suffered financially.

Farmers in Paba upazila have been found to have suffered the most in Rajshahi. Most of the fish are farmed in this upazila. Furthermore, the fish has been damaged in all the upazilas in the district, including Durgapur, Mohanpur, Bagmara and Godagari. In ponds where there were large fish, more fish died. Farmers have tried to sell large fish at a nominal price.

Jahangir Alam, a fish farmer from Paba upazila, said: “I went to the pond after the rain and saw the fish floating dead. The fish worth thousands of rupees has died in front of my eyes. Later some of the fish were taken to market. The rest of the fish rotted in the pond.

Abdul Matin, a fish farmer from Mohanpur upazila, said: “I discovered in the morning that there were dead fish floating in the pond.” Knowing the matter, when I went to the pond, I saw that many fish had died and had been floating. More than half of the fish in the pond have died. The rest of the fish are in the pond. About 4 lakh rupees have been lost.

Riaz Uddin, president of the Kesharhat Fish Market Association, said the market was suddenly importing more fish. The fish was almost rotten. It was not suitable to be sent to Dhaka. Besides Mohanpur, traders also brought fish from Puthia, Durgapur, Paba, and Bagmara. Rui, catla and silver carp weighing 3-4 kg have been sold on the market at Rs 60-70 per kg.

If you want to meet the chairman of the Fisheries Department at Rajshahi University (UK), Prof. M Manjurul Alam said that the plant particles in the pond could not photosynthesize because the sun did not rise. Plant particles cannot release oxygen by absorbing carbon dioxide. Due to this there is a shortage of oxygen in the pond. And farmers were unable to sell fish during the Crown period. There were more fish in the pond. Then the fish begins to die from lack of oxygen. The farmers really had nothing to do.

Bagmara Upazila Fisheries Officer Shahadat Hossain said the ponds were starved of oxygen in the wake of the disaster. If there are more fish in the pond, the more likely they will die. However, those who have moderate fish in the pond, their loss will be less. So now you have to cut down on the fish in the pond.

The district fisheries officer, Alok Kumar Saha, said the weather was bad in recent days. Most of the Rajshahi traders grow fish with additional feed in the pond. Due to which there is a lack of oxygen in the ponds. And the fish died. Also, many people grow additional fish in the pond. The fish in the pond should be cut down before the monsoon.

He said they have produced a preliminary report of the damage. Some 718 metric tons of fish have been said to have died in Rajshahi in two days. The number of farmers affected is 4,930. They have lost 14 crore 73 lakh rupees. It can be more or less. This loss account will be sent to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the Department of Fisheries.
