Facebook Head of Security Vikram Sen, Public Policy Director Ashwini Rana, recently appointed Bangladesh Affairs Officer Sabnaj Rashid Dia of Facebook and Iram Iqbal, Partner of Facebook Mobile, participated in the meeting on behalf of Facebook. In addition to the minister, BTRC Director General, Brigadier General Mustafa Kamal, NBR (Fiscal Policy) member Alamgir Hossain and some other officials represented Bangladesh.
Mustafa Jabbar said the discussions highlighted the concerns of the Bangladeshi state, people and social security regarding the use of Facebook. In response, Facebook officials discussed a very positive attitude. During the discussion, she told Facebook officials that the type of propaganda and security concerns regarding the use of Facebook in Bangladesh is different from other countries. Because Bangladesh has the defeated forces from the 1971 liberation war and they are still involved in various kinds of propaganda against the state. Now they use Facebook for propaganda. He called on Facebook to comply with Bangladeshi laws and regulations and refrain from spreading information about personal safety, rumors or propaganda, terrorism, militancy, sectarianism, sedition, pornography, and social and cultural values of Bangladesh. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of Facebook to comply with all applicable Bangladeshi laws and regulations, including the Bangladesh Digital Security Law.
The meeting was conducted in accordance with global ‘community standards’, Facebook officials said at the meeting. Now Facebook is thinking of giving more importance to the local culture, customs and values of different countries. They will take appropriate action taking into account the concerns of Bangladesh with due importance. For this reason, a Bengali officer has been appointed in response to the demand from Bangladesh.
During the three-hour meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s firm commitment to protecting citizens prevailed. It also ensures that any existing problems regarding the content will be resolved quickly. She agreed to have at least one meeting per month with people related to Facebook.
Previously, Minister Mustafa Jabbar held a meeting with senior Facebook officials on the sidelines of the Mobile Devices World Congress in Dhaka on September 23, 2019 and in Barcelona, Spain, in February 2016. After that, the minister was met with Facebook more than once in Dhaka and abroad. He has also been in regular contact with Facebook officials since 2016.
