The RAB arrested Father Pradeep Gregory, 50, for raping a 15-year-old girl in a church in Rajshahi’s Tanore upazila for three days.
He was arrested at Bishop House near Amchattar in Rajshahi around 11:30 pm on Tuesday. Earlier, a rape case was filed against him at the Tanore police station around 9pm.
ATM Mainul Islam, RAB-5 Rajshahi company commander, said efforts to catch fugitive Pradeep Gregory began after learning of the rape. He was arrested later that night at Bishop’s House. He was then handed over to the Tanore Police Station.
Father Pradeep of the Sadhujan Mary Vianni church in the Mundumala Mahalipara area of Tanore upazila. The girl, who belongs to the area’s indigenous Christian community, disappeared after cutting grass near the church near her home on the morning of September 27.
His brother kept a general diary (GD) at the police station the next day after not finding him after much searching. It was later reported Monday afternoon that the missing teenager was held captive in the church’s father Pradeep’s home.
Later, relatives of the girl and people in the area rescued the girl. Then, in the evening, an arbitration meeting was held inside the church.
It was decided to remove Father Pradeep since he was found guilty there. The victim stayed with the sisters within the church, not with his family. It was later said that if the girl’s relatives removed the missing GD from the police station, they would send him to his family. In addition, the church authorities will bear the cost of the girl until she reaches puberty.
On Tuesday afternoon, the girl’s brother went to the police station and said that his sister had been found. But even then the girl was not handed over to her family. He was arrested by Father Patrick Gómez, head of the church, and Kamel Mardi, head of the arbitration.
Tanore Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sushant Kumar Mahato and OC Rakibul Hasan rescued the girl from the church at night. The girl’s brother filed a rape case at the police station at night.
Tanore OC Rakibul Hasan Police Station said the girl was sent to the Comprehensive Crisis Center (OCC) at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RAMEC) on Wednesday morning for a physical examination. The arrested Father Pradeep will also be sent to jail through the court.
