Flower growers in Narayanganj’s Bandar upazila said that despite losses caused by the coronavirus epidemic last year, it is selling well this year.
Farhana Sultana, agricultural extension officer for Upazila, said flower growers were affected by the coronavirus last year. This year again, farmers were unable to grow flowers in time as the land was submerged in water. Due to this, production has been lower. However, farmers get good prices for the flowers.
He told bdnews24.com that last year flowers were grown on 90 hectares of land in upazila, but this year different varieties of flowers have been grown on 70 hectares of land.
Abdul Baten, President of the Cooperative Society of Flower Growers and Entrepreneurs of Upazila, said: It is expected that this year there will be a flower business in this upazila for millions of rupees.
The cultivation of flowers has been observed in the Sabdi area of the upazila along the edge of different houses and on both sides of the road.
Farmers said they hope to make good profits this year with Pahela Falgun, World Love Day on February 14 and International Mother Language Day on February 21.
It has been seen in the field that farmers are busy growing flowers in the land and garden.
Sabdi farmer Zakir Hossain said the land had been submerged for more days this year than any other. That is why they have planted young trees late. The flowers are too late to arrive.
“However, all the flowers will bloom before February 21st. The flower market is better than last year.”
Different flower species are being commercially cultivated in the Sabdi, Dighaldi, Madhabpasha, Arjadi, Felardi, Akhtala, Mukhkaldi, Shelsardi and Chowdhurybari, Chinardi, Mollabari, Kalabagh, Nabiganj Tingaon areas of Kalagachhia, union of the upazila.
In these lands, names of 25 species of flowers have been found, among them gerbera, tuberose, gypsy, cherry, dahlia, chrysanthemum, yellow marigold, Chinese marigold, woodpecker, kamini, belly, jaba, gandharaja.
Many visitors come to these areas from different parts of the district to see flower growing. Farmers said that these areas are popular for their walks from morning to night.
Sakhawat Hossain, an official from a private organization, came to visit Sabdi with his wife and children on Saturday afternoon.
He said: “I came to visit the flower kingdom with my family on the day the office closed. I have never seen so many flowers of different species blooming together in different colors. Looks great. They also bought many of their favorite flowers. “
A woman named Shammi Akhter said: “I am surprised to see so many flowers. It feels great. “
