On June 5, the central government issued a series of ordinances to implement reform measures in the country’s agricultural sector. The Union Minister of Agriculture and Agricultural Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, introduced three agriculture-related bills in the Lok Sabha on Monday to give full legal recognition to those ordinances.
The purpose of one of the three bills is to amend the country’s existing essential commodity laws and lift the upper limit for storing certain agricultural products.
Another bill aims to free up interstate trade in agricultural products by eliminating the APMC laws currently in effect in the states, and the third bill aims to legalize contract farming in the states.
Members of the opposition in parliament have strongly opposed the central government and the three proposed laws, calling it interference in state power.
