An eyewitness, a GNC self-propeller driver, described the horrific incident that night with Raihan Ahmed, 30, a young man from Akhalia who died as a result of “torture” at the Bandarbazar police post in Sylhet. He said the driver and another accomplice were on patrol in a GNC autorickshaw at the Bandarbazar outpost that night. On one of the autorickshaws, the police took Raihan to the outpost.
The autorickshaw driver, who did not want to be identified, told a Sylhet YouTube channel that police removed Raihan from a street sweeper’s room in the Kastghar area of Sylhet on Saturday (October 12). Earlier, two unidentified men went to the police in front of the Mashrafia restaurant in the city and reported to the police that a robbery had occurred in the alley of the wooden house.
The autorickshaw driver said police went and called Raihan out of a street sweeper’s room. At the time, he did not see any Raihan kidnapping or massacre. The police took him out of the alley and took him to the outpost in the second autorickshaw (the driver’s companion). Raihan was healthy then. Raihan, who was arrested at the time, had an argument with the police and said, “I am not a thief or a criminal.”
After Raihan was taken inside the police outpost, two autorickshaw drivers waited outside the outpost. Later in the morning, Raihan was taken to Osmani Hospital in an autorickshaw by one of the two drivers in critical condition.
The autorickshaw driver added that Raihan’s condition worsened after he was taken to the hospital and given oxygen. Earlier, the driver saw wound marks on his knees and fingers as he pulled him out of the outpost. At that moment, the driver heard two policemen say: ‘Does someone kill someone so ruthlessly? I had to kill him because he gave the order. ‘
The autorickshaw driver said SI Akbar was at the outpost that night and that Raihan was beaten on his command. The driver said that the SI himself had brutally tortured Raihan.
