A panel of experts in the United States has recommended immediate approval of the modern vaccine as the second vaccine for coronavirus in the United States. An advisory panel from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended on Thursday approving the vaccine for use among people 18 and older by a vote of 20-0. One member of the panel did not vote that day.
According to the BBC, the FDA approved the vaccine only after the same panel voted in favor of the emergency use of the Pfizer-Bioentech vaccine.
As a result of the experts’ recommendation, the FDA is expected to release the vaccine for emergency use soon, observers said. In that case, the vaccine is expected to be available in the United States starting next week.
The FDA chief said the FDA would take swift action to approve the modern vaccine. So that the pharmaceutical company can begin to transport millions of doses.
Regulators said earlier this week that the modern vaccine was 99 percent safe and effective. The United States has already agreed to buy 200 million doses of Moderna, and Moderna is set to supply another six million doses once the vaccine is approved by the FDA.
Modern vaccine storage requires a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius, which is equivalent to a normal freezer. Pfizer’s vaccine, on the other hand, requires a temperature of minus 75 degrees Celsius. As a result, the modern vaccine is easier to distribute than the Pfizer vaccine.
Modern vaccines, like the Pfizer vaccine, require two doses per person. The second dose of Modern should be taken 28 days after the first.
The coronavirus is by far the most common cause of death in the United States. According to Johns Hopkins University, 1,61,98,633 people have been infected and 310,457 have died in the country so far.
