The Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Tithi Sarkar, a student expelled from Jagannath University, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments by insulting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media Facebook.
CID ASP (Media) Jisanul Haque confirmed to Jugantar that he was detained on Wednesday night.
Details will be released at a press conference on Thursday, he said.
Tithi Sarkar was expelled from the university by an order signed by the Jagannath University registrar on October 26 on charges of hurting religious sentiments.
On November 5, a case was filed against the government under the Digital Security Law. A man named Abu Musa Rifat presented the case in the court of Dhaka Assam Cyber Court judge Jaglul Hossain.
It is alleged in the case that Tithi Sarkar, a student in the Department of Zoology at Jagannath University for the academic year 2017-2018, hurt and insulted religious sentiments from her Facebook page at different times from October 16 to 23.
The complaint further claims that Tithi has already been suspended from her organization Student Rights Council for hurting religious sentiments. Tithi Sarkar was also expelled from the university by an order signed by the Jagannath University Registrar on October 26 for the same charge.
