A teacher has been beheaded in France for displaying a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a classroom. Police also shot and killed the alleged killer.

The killings took place on Friday on a street in the Conflante Saint-Honorine area, northwest of Paris.

A police officer told the Associated Press, on condition of anonymity, that the alleged killer had a knife and an Airsoft pistol in hand. The police shot and killed the man 800 meters from the place where the teacher was killed.

The police officer said that about 10 days ago, the history teacher showed some cartoons of the Prophet (PBUH) in his class, which is very offensive to Muslims. He had been receiving death threats since the cartoon debate.

The teacher was attacked on the street in front of his workplace high school on Friday.

Meanwhile, a source in the French judiciary told AFP news agency that four people, including a child, had been detained on suspicion of involvement in the killings.

The tutor of one of the students had recently filed a complaint against the teacher, a police officer said. He added that none of the children of the alleged killer went to school. However, the identity of the person was not disclosed.

The French antiterrorist prosecutor said the killings were related to a terrorist organization.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited the site on Friday night. He described the killings as “Islamic terrorist attacks.”
Police have advised the public to avoid the scene for now.

The Aragonese mayor, Thibault Humbert, praised the efforts of the police to quickly deactivate the alleged criminal.

French Interior Minister Gerald Dermanin said a crisis center had been set up to deal with Friday’s attack. The matter is under investigation.
