There is credible evidence that 39 civilians were killed by Australian special forces in war-torn Afghanistan. The killings took place during the war in Afghanistan, according to a report.
The report was released by the Australian Defense Forces (ADF) on Thursday after a four-year investigation. Several members of the force have been accused of killing 39 innocent people in Afghanistan.
Evidence of the killings was found against 19 current and former members of the force, according to the report. The investigation committee found evidence that unarmed prisoners, farmers or civilians were killed between 2009 and 2013.
The investigation was led by Major General Paul Brereton. The investigative committee interviewed more than 400 eyewitnesses and found evidence of crimes against members of the military.
According to one report, the Australian military killed 39 Afghan civilians in 23 isolated incidents. Twenty-five members of the Air Force have been charged there.
On Thursday, Australia’s ADF chief General Angus Campbell called the incident “shameful”. It says these people were not killed by mistake, unknowingly, or out of confusion.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called on Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to express his deep regret for the release of this important investigative report. Afghanistan has yet to comment on the report.
