DNA tests have found evidence that four people were directly involved in the gang rape of a girl in the dormitory of MC College in Sylhet. The main defendants in the case are Saifur Rahman, Tarekul Islam alias Tarek, Shah Mahbubur Rahman alias Rony and Arjun Laskar. Eight defendants in the case, including these four, are in jail. Others aided in the rape of all four. Sylhet Metropolitan Police (Media) Additional Deputy Commissioner BM Ashraf Ullah confirmed receiving the DNA test report on Sunday evening and said preparations were underway to file a charge sheet in court.
The girl was gang-raped in the MC College dorm on the night of September 25. That same night, the victim’s husband filed a case at the Shahparan Police Station. Saifur Rahman, Tarekul Islam, Arjun Laskar, Rabiul Islam, Shah Mohammad, known as Chhatra League activists in the case. Mahbubur Rahman alias Shah Rony and Mahfuzur Rahman alias Masum were named as defendants in the case. Apart from this, two or three other people were charged. The police and the RAB arrested a total of eight people. Among them, Misbauer Rahman alias Rajan and Ainuddin, who were not named in the statement, were arrested as suspects. The eight detainees were detained on several occasions and testified in court under article 164.
Previously, DNA samples were collected from six defendants on October 1 and 3. After collecting samples at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, they were sent to the Dhaka Lab. From there, the sample test report reached the investigating officer through the court.
Shahparan Police Inspector (investigation) Indranil Bhattacharya said: “The investigation is over. We were waiting for the DNA test report. The charge sheet will be filed in court soon.
After this heinous incident in the MC College dormitory, the university authorities, the Ministry of Education and the National University formed three investigative committees. Although their report was presented, it was not published. In addition, a judicial inquiry committee was formed under the direction of the High Court, headed by the Sylhet District and Session Judge. The investigation report was presented to the Audiencia of the National High Court on October 16 on behalf of this commission. It is known that the Superior Court magistracy accepted the report after the hearing on October 20.
Although the report was not published, the National University canceled the scholarships of four students who were arrested based on the October 12 report. Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman aka Rony, Rabiul Islam and Mahfuzur Rahman are the four students whose studies have been canceled. In addition to canceling their scholarships, they have also been permanently expelled from MC College.
