Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz held a telephone conversation to discuss the development of bilateral relations.
The G20 summit will be held in Saudi Arabia on Saturday and Sunday. The conference was convened on Friday afternoon, the day before the conference started, according to the Turkish president’s office. Turkey and Saudi Arabia are members of the G20.
According to Al Jazeera, Erdogan and Salman agreed on the development of bilateral relations and the settlement of differences between the two countries over the years.
Saudi Arabia has requested Turkey to attend the G20 summit. In response, Erdogan addressed the conference via video link.
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Turkey have not been very good in recent years. The situation of the two influential countries of the Muslim world on multiple issues is exactly at the opposite pole. Saudi Arabia has even imposed an unwritten boycott of Turkish products. Citizens are also discouraged from traveling to Turkey.
Turkish products are being pulled from the country’s superstores. In addition, various obstacles are being created in the importation of Turkish products.
Considering the situation, the heads of state of the two main Muslim countries have spoken and agreed to move forward. However, it cannot be said that the relationship between the two countries is normalized in this phone call.
The trial of some Saudi government officials is scheduled to begin in Turkey on November 24 in connection with the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Those officials are very close to Prince Muhammad. It remains to be seen how much the ice of the Salman-Erdogan relationship will melt after the phone call.
The most serious problem behind the recent deterioration in relations with Saudi Arabia is the murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Saudi Arabia has been criticized around the world for its brutal killings. However, as the incident took place on Turkish soil, there was a disagreement between the two countries on the investigation and trial initiative.
Saudi Arabia has also accused Turkey of unnecessarily interfering in various affairs in the Middle East. The popularity of the country’s leader Erdogan in the Muslim world and criticism of the influential Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and his anti-Semitism have enraged the Muslim world.
Israel is believed to have established diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain through the mediation of MBS.
