Erdogan’s cartoon in Shirley Abdo, Turkey, is taking legal action

Turkey has made it clear that it will take diplomatic and legal action against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after an offensive cartoon was published in the French weekly Shirley Abdo. The cartoon shows Turkish leader Erdogan undressing a burqa-clad woman.

According to a BBC report on Wednesday, Turkish state media reported that Turkish prosecutors officially launched an investigation into the French satirical magazine. Tensions between Turkey and France have risen since French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent tough stance on Islam.

Erdogan’s cartoon appeared on the cover of the latest issue of the weekly magazine on Wednesday. Turkish officials have called the cartoon a “heinous attempt to spread racism and cultural hatred.” In the published cartoon, Erdogan is seen sitting in a white T-shirt and underwear.

Erdogan’s cartoon has been published amid ongoing tensions over Emanuel Macron’s anti-Muslim stance since the publication of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cartoon. Tension has risen since a teacher was beheaded in France this month for showing a Mohammad (PBUH) cartoon in the classroom on freedom of expression.

President Emanuel Macron has called for a boycott of French products in protest of Erdogan’s comments, saying he would build a secular France after his teacher was beheaded. He also advised Macron to seek psychiatric treatment.

According to a BBC report, Fahretin Altun, communications director for the Turkish president, said: We strongly condemn this publication’s attempt to spread cultural hatred and racism. “

Turkish Vice President Fouat Okte has asked the international community to speak out against “this insult.” “No one can be fooled by talking about freedom of thought,” he wrote in a tweet. Other top government officials in the country have also condemned him.
