Calcutta: The Calcutta High Court has issued a landmark verdict declaring “all containment zones for puja mandapa or no-entry zones”. Visitors cannot enter any mandapa.
The Superior Court on Monday (October 19) ruled that the directive was effective for all bidding in the state.
Corona is rampant in West Bengal along with the rest of the world. Corona could take a more deadly shape in the state if the number of visitors drops in the puja mandapa. Recently, a letter was sent to the state government regarding such concerns. But even that did not agree.
Subsequently, a public interest litigation was filed in the Calcutta High Court demanding the closure of Durgotsab in Corona. The Superior Court has rendered this verdict in that case. Previously, the court had followed the same path during Eid and Rath Yatra.
On this day, Judge Sanjeev Banerjee wants to know, how can you handle a multitude of millions of people with a few thousand policemen? The state government has said it will increase the number of police officers.
The judge said 34,000 bids are underway in the state. Of these, there are three thousand puja mandales in Calcutta alone. But there are 30,000 police officers in the state. If it is too much, it can be 32 thousand. This is not enough to handle the police worship crowd. So each puja mandapa must have a containment zone or no entry zone. No visitor can enter the mandapa.
Furthermore, the verdict said that the bidding committees cannot allow more than 20 people to enter the mandapa at the same time. A list of the names of those who will enter the puja should also be posted in front of the mandapa.
‘If it is a small pavilion, it is 5 meters and if it is a large pavilion, no visitor can enter within 10 meters. Limits should be made by measuring the tape around the mandapa. The police administration will ensure the organization of the bidding without spectators. Do not hang any entrance board outside each puja mandapa. ‘
Regular visitors will visit the virtual idol.
A divisional court of judges Sanjeev Banerjee and Abhijit Banerjee ordered state police officers to report to the court after Lakshmi Puja to determine whether the work was being carried out according to the court order.
