Shawkat Ali Emon demanded 10 lakh rupees as a dowry from his wife Ridita Raza. When he refused to pay, Emon beat him and kicked him out of the house.
Police recently filed a charge sheet against Emon in a case brought by his wife at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court. Ramna Police Inspector Tahmina Rahman, the investigating officer in the case, mentioned this on the charge sheet. Nine people have been called as witnesses on the charge sheet to prove the case. The case is scheduled for next Sunday (January 3).
Tahmina Rahman said: “Shawkat Ali Emon is a lethal and greedy man for dowry. He married Ridita Reza on February 28 according to Islamic Sharia. According to the preliminary investigation, Emon has been beating and torturing his wife Ridita Raza for the dowry since the marriage. After this, around 11:30 pm on July 3, the defendant Emon again demanded Tk 10 lakh as a dowry from Badini at his home in Eskaton Garden under the Ramna Police Station. When Ridita Reza refused to pay the dowry, the defendant Emon beat his wife and kicked her out of the house.
On September 20, Ridita Reza filed a lawsuit against her husband Shawkat Ali Emon at the Ramna Police Station for beating her for Ramna’s dowry. On September 25, Shawkat Ali Emon was arrested at his home in Eskaton in a case of abuse of women by his wife Ridita Razar. The next day (September 25), the police presented him at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court. At that time, the investigating officer requested to keep him in jail until the investigation of the case is completed. Following the request, the court ordered that he be sent to jail.
On October 1, Emon’s lawyer applied for bail at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court. After the hearing, Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Kaysarul Islam granted his request for bail with a bail of 2,000 taka.
On February 26, 2020, Shawkat Ali Emon married Ridita Reza, an announcer for a private television channel.
