Elephants were shot and killed in Cox’s Bazar for fear of damaging pepper fields

A wild elephant landed in a pepper field near the Fulchhari forest at the Eidgaon junction of Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila. The elephant was shot dead thinking it would damage the crop. According to the forest department and locals, the elephant went down to the nearby pepper tree in search of food due to deforestation. The bullet hit the elephant’s left eye a little higher. The elephant’s body was buried in the ground after an autopsy around 9 p.m. Sunday.

In early November, four more wild elephants were killed by electric shocks and gunshots in the Eidgaon, Chakaria and Ramu forests in Cox’s Bazar. Due to deforestation and deforestation, there is a food crisis for wild elephants.

According to forest department sources, on December 20, at noon, local forest workers discovered that the carcass of a wild elephant lay in the Rajghat bit area in the Fulchhari mountain range. An autopsy team led by Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila livestock officer Lebu Lal Dutt arrived at the scene around 4 p.m.

Chakaria Dulahazara Bangabandhu Safari Park’s Deputy Veterinary Surgeon Mostafizur Rahman and Rajghat Forest Beat Officer Mohammad Hasan were on the team. At around 8:30 p.m., they completed the autopsy on the elephant. Then the dead elephant was buried in the ground.
