The information was given at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Internal Affairs on Thursday.

The meeting discussed a report on the general activities of the Department of Immigration and Passports.

According to the report, the service is currently being expanded in 48 districts.

Electronic passport activities started in January this year in Bangladesh.

At the time, the government said that Bangladesh was the 119th country in the world to launch an electronic passport.

Less than a decade has passed since the introduction of handwritten passport in machine readable passport or MRP in Bangladesh. But since there is no system to store 10 fingerprints in the MRP database, there are cases of multiple passports in the name of one person.

In view of this, the government has taken the initiative to introduce an electronic passport (e-passport) to reduce the suffering of citizens and stop the trend of having multiple passports in the name of one. On June 21, 2016, the project was approved by ECNEC.

In July of that year, the Department of Passports and Immigration signed an agreement with the German company Veridos to implement the project. They are supplying e-passports and other equipment to Bangladesh at a cost of Tk 3,500 crore.

Biometric passports, also known as electronic passports, use smart card technology to accommodate antennas and microprocessor chips. The important information of this passport is stored in the data page and the passport chip.

Meanwhile, the meeting recommended that doping tests / special health tests be compulsory before admission to higher education institutions and before the final exam. It is also recommended to take all drivers in the country for a doping test.

The police administration has already been thanked for initiating doping tests on members of the police.

Furthermore, the meeting was informed that the process of formulating the ‘2020 Drug Testing Rules’ is underway.

The meeting recommended taking steps to curb the so-called youth gangs, including continuing the ongoing anti-drug campaign, as well as the rise in youth crime in the country.

Chairman of the Committee. Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, member of the committee chaired by Shamsul Haque Tuku. Afsarul Amin, Md. Participants were Habibur Rahman, Shamsul Alam Dudu, Kujendra Lal Tripura, Pir Fazlur Rahman, Nur Mohammad and Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed.

At the beginning of the meeting, deep sorrow was expressed over the death of Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
