Georgia will recount votes to ensure transparency in the US presidential elections, state officials say.

Georgia has decided to recount the votes of current President and Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Secretary of State Brad Rafensberger made the announcement at a news conference Friday. News from The Guardian.

Brad Rafensberger said a total of 5 million votes were cast in Georgia. Some 4,000 votes remain to be counted and 8,000 military ballots have yet to arrive. These will only actually be counted before Friday. However, the recount was decided as the gap between the two candidates was very small in the votes counted thus far.

There are 16 electoral votes in this state. Biden is ahead of Trump by 1,500 votes. To become president, a candidate must obtain 270 out of 538 electoral votes. Biden is already 274 ahead of his rival.
